Project summary

This collaborative project consists of two components: 1. Miqayel Voskanyan (Armenian tar player) performed in Himara, Albania, with the Polyphonic Group of Himara and the residency was based on an ancient Albanian song "Vajzë e Valëve" (Girl of the Waves) in the Iso-Polyphony style. Miqayel improvised with the group during the festival in Himara, which took place in August 2024. Miqayel also hosted a workshop on the Armenian instrument tar. 2. Albanian musicians will travel to Armenia to perform with Miqayel Voskanyan at Yerevan Music Week in September 2024. They will also host a workshop on Albenian singing. 3. The project will also have an official studio recording. When mixing the two styles, we will achieve a brand new blend of sounds and melodies.

Artist

Miqayel Voskanyan

Biography: Voskanyan is an improvisational Armenian tar player, composer and vocalist creating a distinctive sound in jazz, folk and world music. He melds tar into multi-genre compositions in both solo and group performances pushing the boundaries of Armenian music.

Miqayel presents a new perspective on the national Armenian instrument outside of traditional folk orchestras by positioning it as a lead instrument and applying innovative performance techniques. Melding the tar into multi-genre original compositions Miqayel weaves a signature modern sound with Armenian lyrical vocals.
The Polyphonic Group of Himara with Katina Beleri preserves the unique musical genre of the Albanian Iso-Polyphony. It has appeared at important festivals in Albania, Greece, Italy, Germany, France, Netherlands, Norway, Hungary and Israel.
