Project summary

Júlia Kozakova´s project Manuša tracks old traditional Roma (Gypsy) songs and their stories from Slovakia. Through this project Julia and her band will gain opportunities to perform at Todo Mundo Festival/Serbia, Etnosoi!/Finland and Napoli World/Italy. All partners will provide diverse support during the residencies for Julia through building new audiences, networking with local professionals and sessions with mentors, journalists and agents. These activities will help to create new opportunities and visibility for her. While meeting students and scholars of Art Academies she can present her knowledge about Roma traditional music in Central Europe and her projects with Roma minority in Slovakia. Artists and festivals participate in the EFFEA Seminars and online meetings.

Julia Kozakova

Biography: Júlia Kozáková is a singer from Slovakia. Her project Manuša tracks traditional Roma songs from Slovakia. Since she was 13, Julia has toured Europe with the Romany children‘s choir Čhavorenge. She has been dedicated to studying the culture and tradition of Roma people in Slovakia and abroad. Her interest was a base for ethnological research and active work with Roma people in Slovakia. She has studied music and social anthropology at SOAS University of London. Her internationally released debut album Manuša was the best performing world music album from Slovakia according to the World Music Charts Europe in 2022. In 2023 she was nominated for the UPBEAT Awards 2023 and has performed at off- WOMEX. Her live performances brought Julia to new audiences in Italy, Czechia, Estonia and Belgium.
