Project summary

The Flowers of Srebrenica is a stage reimagining of the homonym illustrated novel by Aidan Heir about his trip from Sarajevo to the site of the Srebrenica genocide accompanied by Mustafa, a Bosnian war survivor. Performed by a cast of refugee and migrant actors with lived experiences of war and displacement (from Bosnia, Sudan, Armenia, Syria and Ireland), the production will keep the original journey as its central element, but add a broader frame, using the image of Srebrenica’s flower makers - portrayed by a chorus of women - to challenge the certainties of the Western male protagonist, narrate events and directly connect the stories from Srebrenica genocide with events experienced by survivors of similar atrocities. Planning to tour in 2025 to mark the 30th anniversary of the genocide.

Artist

LegalAliens Theatre

Biography: LegalAliens Theatre was founded In London in 2012 by theatre-maker Lara Parmiani in response to a lack of representation of first-generation migrant artists in British theatre. The female-led ensemble - made of artists who have migrated to the U.K. from different countries - has changed through the years, but at the core of its vision remains the belief in a "necessary theatre": challenging power structures; accessible to all; and platforming migrants as artists, creatives, participants and audiences, reclaiming a sustainable space for artists that are often overlooked by mainstream theatre. They were rewarded the Theatre of Sanctuary status celebrating their continuous work in co-creating with refugees and migrants through workshops and productions.
