Project summary

Dance Laboratory Rhodes, Istanbul Fringe Festival and Dance Days Chania propose to accompany choreographer Mairi Pardalaki’s project “Dünya Maskara”, by framing its upcoming residencies in Greece and Turkey and showcasing the final result during their 2024 festival editions, in July, August and September. Mairi Pardalaki develops a bilingual Turkish-Greek group performance that brings forward the less-known heritage of “karamanlidika” archives: a Turkish-dialect writing system using the Greek alphabet, used by the Rum orthodox population of the Ottoman Empire. Together with poet Cagla Meknuze, they juxtapose their writings with the themes of these archives (love, death, religion) and confront present times through the performers' spoken words and movements.

Mairi Pardalaki

Biography: Mairi Pardalaki is a Greek-French performer and choreographer from Athens, based in Paris. She has worked among others for Romeo Castellucci's “Moses und Aron” at the Paris Opera, for Alexandra Pirici's ongoing action “Parthenon Marbles” and for Akram Khan's outdoor performance “Kadamati”.
Mairi stages contemporary narratives where text, music and movement play an equal part. With an equal interest in science, two performances have been created together with physicists.
Since 2020, with extensive residencies in Turkey and Greece, she has been engaged in uncovering old and creating new narratives between Greek and Turkish cultures.
Mairi has a degree from the “Communication, Media & Culture” Department of Panteion University of Athens.
