Project summary

For over ten years, Phonetic Orchestra (PO) has sought new ways to create and present new work through their award-winning performances integrating new digital technology with adventurous concert formats. With ‘A Catalogue of Dreams’, PO extends the concert experience into the realm of sleep, rest, and dreams. This project sees Assisi Suono Sacro Festival partnering with Phonetic Orchestra and Prague Quiet Music Collective, in order to co-create a new 8-hour work to be performed overnight to a sleeping audience at significant contemporary music festivals in Italy and Czech Republic. Masterclasses and work-in-progress events will also provide audiences with insight into their unique mode of collaborative composition that has been in development for over a decade.

Phonetic Orchestra

Biography: Phonetic Orchestra explores the relationship between the physical, digital, and imagined experience.

The group brings together an international cast of musicians from the worlds of contemporary classical music, multidisciplinary collaboration and experimental improvisation to create work that embraces site-specificity, extreme durational performances, and the porous boundaries between notation, time, space, and sound.

Phonetic Orchestra programmes have included 8-hour marathon sleep concerts at leading international festivals and institutions. In 2020, the Phonetic Orchestra presented Silent Towns, a non-stop 24-hour livestreamed performance with simultaneous contributions from members in Melbourne, Perth and Berlin, for which they were awarded the 2021 APRA Art Music Award.
