Project summary

AMUZ (Flanders Festival Antwerp) will provide several sessions for the Flutes & Frets Duo with with early music specialist and performer Peter Van Heyghen to rethink their concert programmes. They have been invited to Antwerp for a three day live coaching period in October 2023 with Peter. AMUZ (Flanders Festival Antwerp) will organise a meeting between the artists andprimary school children to introduce them playfully to the variety of their historical instruments. This coaching period will result in three concerts by Flutes & Frets Duo (in Antwerp, York, and Krakow) presenting their programme in different settings and for different audiences. When attending the partner festivals the artists will encounter the local programmers to add to their feedback and networking.

Flutes & Frets Duo

Biography: After collaborating at the Royal College of Music in London, Beth Stone and Daniel Murphy founded the Flutes & Frets Duo in March 2021. They are an upcoming, unique ensemble passionate about showing the versatility of the flute and plucked instruments combination. Their aim is to play all types of music on the instruments they were originally composed for. They achieve this by exploring a wide scope of repertoire ranging from medieval all the way through to contemporary, and using the appropriate instruments of each era (medieval, renaissance flutes, baroque traverso flute, 18th or 19th century wooden traverse flutes with keys, modern flute, lute, theorbo, romantic guitar, contemporary classical guitar…)
Flutes & Frets Duo is to reveal and demonstrate how the sound palette that composers were working with, changed over time - enabling audiences to experience the journey that music has taken to get to the modern sonority.
