Project summary

Sotak is a music project that proposes a unique blend of cultural influences. With 10 original themes, it presents Samba as a powerful language that unites, strengthens, and connects. In the Portuguese language, "sotaque" refers to the way of speaking of a region. In SotaK, Karla refers to the different voices, sounds, and traditions that converge in the ancestral ritual that is the roda de samba (an Afro-Brazilian social gathering in a circle format). SotaK proposes to unite the different diasporic cultures present in Portugal reflected through their music accents, such as the Cape Verdean Morna and the Angolan Semba in an Afro-Brazilian roda de samba.

Karla da Silva

Biography: Karla da Silva is a singer with plural influences, having been recognised by the renowned Brazilian artist Elza Soares as "a voice that brought colours to a raw city". She started singing Samba 14 years ago in the bars of Lapa, in Rio de Janeiro. She recorded her first album Quintal in 2011, and then she was a semi-finalist in the first edition of The Voice Brasil. In 2014, her first album was selected by a call, the Natura Musical for a release tour around Brazil. She presented the album in 2015 in Europe and was invited to the Natura Musical Festival, performing alongside big names in Brazilian music such as Gal Costa, Milton Nascimento and Emicida. Already living in Portugal, Karla was invited to be part of the Orquestra Bamba Social, a collective of 17 musicians passionate about samba.
