Project summary
‘Slow Steps Have Ears’ is a performative, site-responsive sound-installation, in which portable speakers are hidden in an urban site. From the speakers a series of constantly transforming site-specific sound pieces are played, performing the space. The sound compositions are created from locally recorded sounds, pieces of conversations, domestic sounds, minimalist musical pieces, and are played on a level that blends into the acoustic environment. Thus a unique acoustic scenery is created, a deep and playful experience between a sonic meditation and a sound-treasure hunt. The artist will develop and create his project with the help of EFFEA, which provides him an opportunity to realise a new piece in an international coproduction and to collaborate with local communities in the creation process.© László Halász
Artist
Dávid Somló
Biography:
David Somló is a Hungarian interdisciplinary artist based in Budapest. His work focuses on sound, space and interactions. In his artistic practice he is creating theatrical/performative experiences exploring the relations of the physical, the social and personal space. He composes/choreographs situations which are offering a complex, non-repeating outcome from simple elements, structures and instructions. He almost always works in a site-specific and public space context. He created performances, installations and interventions in foot tunnels, underground stations, a forest, a swimming boat, a Turkish bath, abandoned offices, a mining museum, a synagogue garden, private flats and various other public spaces. His pieces have been presented by Hungarian and international festivals. He gained experiences also in curating site-specific events (Kolorádó Festival, Jazzaj). He is currently finishing his doctoral studies at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Budapest with the research topic of “Configuration and Movement of Bodies and Sounds in Space”. During his doctoral studies he has spent a guest semester at the Studio of Spatial Communication at the Academy of Fine Arts, Bratislava. Earlier he has received a Masters degree in Interdisciplinary Composition (Thesis: The conceptual and practical use of space and place in sound-based performances) from Goldsmiths College, London and a Bachelor and Masters degree in Sociology, ELTE, Budapest.
