Project summary

Latvian performing artist Katrīna Dūka works with a group of 6 local queer enthusiasts to learn the basics of Argentine tango dance over summer. Their aim is to (re)discover the dance through their own lens of acceptance, respect, co-operation, non-sexualised eroticism. The Argentine tango is a dance performed in an embrace and based on improvisation, that reflects a sense of transgression, freedom and intimate communication of sensitive feelings. Queer Tango is a form of Argentine tango where traditional heteronormative roles are disregarded, and it is an act of non-hegemonic identities seizing power for themselves. The group explores the phenomenon of Queer Tango to introduce it to communities in Riga and beyond to encourage the LGBTQ+ community to create new social spheres.

Katrīna Dūka

Biography: Katrīna Dūka is an emerging performance maker and researcher from Latvia, working in the intersection of performance practices, feminist new materialism, and queerness in a post-Soviet landscape. She obtained her Master’s degree in Performance Practices from ArtEZ University of the Arts (the Netherlands) in 2022. Katrīna mainly works collectively and engages in practices with local communities, non-professional performers, and public space. Identity is a key topic in her practice, which she approaches through storytelling – either using words, images or movement. Her works as a co-author have been presented in the International Festival of Contemporary Theatre “Homo Novus” (LV) and on independent stages in Latvia and Estonia.
